It seems to me that we have finally grasped on to the importance of the ‘more is more’ approach to our skin care routines. I am of course referring to “We” as my fellow skin care junkies out there, and in particular talking about the consideration we give to our cleansing routines.
It’s fair to say that the skin care industry has done a great job in recent times of educating us to appreciate the benefits of double cleansing…. Something Gatineau has been teaching us for… well forever!
Anyway, most of us are now double cleansing and really seeing the difference however I do notice as I travel throughout salons and spas that the same emphasis is not shared to toning?
The Question: Is toning a necessary step in your skincare routine?
Answer: Abso-blooming-lutely!!!
Adding a toner is the easiest way to ramp up your skincare routine to the next level. The problem is, in the past they've been known for sucking moisture out of skin with alcohol or witch hazel, but the truth is a good toner is loaded with benefits; skin-restoring and skin-replenishing ingredients that nourish skin and perfect the complexion.
The fact is, many of us spend our days in artificially heated or cooled environments, possibly not drinking enough water and consuming caffeine (and maybe the odd glass of wine…) which means we are often dealing with seriously dehydrated and lackluster skin!
Enter - Gatineau’s Gentle Silk (Pink) Toning lotion, a high-grade, quality, alcohol-free Toner. The foundations of this iconic Gatineau product date back to 1935.. (can you believe that??) when Jeanne Gatineau launched the industry’s FIRST alcohol-free toning lotion….. not everyone knows that!!
Putting the much-needed moisture back into the skin is one of the key qualities of a good toner. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Hydrating the skin is an important component of your skincare regime, but our Silk toner does all of this and oh so much more! The clue is in the name… SILK ….
Silk has been synonymous with luxury and beauty for thousands of years. The fabric is renowned for its gorgeous, sensual feel, I mean, who doesn’t love the feel of silk on your skin?? Just think about it, when your skin is soft and smooth, you liken it to silk. When your hair feels soft and tangle-free, you say it is as smooth as silk. But did you know the many benefits silk offers us when using it in our products?
Basically, silk is to human skin, what Phillip Schofield is to Holly Willoughby—they're just really compatible and badass together.
Under a microscope we can see that both share the same 18 amino acids and have a similar protein structure (we're talking about silk and skin, not Philip and Holly!!).
Silk Extract, consists primarily of two proteins, and their individual amino acids are like tiny little molecular sponges that will soak up and deliver moisture into the skin. As our skin is over 70% water, adequate hydration is just so important for its healthy functioning and so adding silk to a product is like giving your skin a super charged drink.
Scientific studies show us that Silk extracts are easily absorbed into the skin, allowing powerful antioxidants and amino acids to help repair cells, promote cell regeneration and condition the skin for improved elasticity and resilience.
Recent Chinese and Japanese research studies found silk proteins have been shown to increase growth and survival of human fibroblasts (collagen producing cells) by up to 250 percent and aids in wound healing for skin cells.
I’ve advised many of my clients to add the toner into their routine and see the difference to the skin within just a few weeks, and it’s always a pleasure to hear how adding this one basic item into your normal daily routine you can get such incredible improvement. Use it either on cotton pads after cleansing, or decant into a little spray bottle and use it as a handbag facial spritzer at any point throughout the day as a skin refresher and hydrator! Especially useful in the winter months when the weather is harsh on the skin’s surface or if you work in a dehydrating environment, (I drive some days for hours, and find it’s an absolute skin saver) - immediate quenching in a quick spritz!
With skin regeneration, cellular hydration, skin protection and brightening, there is a lot to love with silk!
So, if like lots of us, you can’t afford the luxury of silk textiles, try a little silk on your face. I think your skin will love it!
